Region Message for November
Hello!
I hope that those of you who attended ARMA International’s conference in Chicago made the trip home and have been working over the past month to implement all those great ideas that were presented! There were many great presentations to choose from, including 2 from GNW members: Andrew SanAgustin and Kyle Stannert. Both of these gentlemen had fantastic presentations and some great information to share, be sure to attend if they come to your chapter.
Andrew and I have both had a theme in our recent region messages, hopefully by now you’ve identified that our theme is building blocks and the many variations they come in. I remember the building blocks from when I was kid (wooden and probably loaded with lead paint) in various shapes and sizes including the most popular one shaped slightly like a bridge. They still exist today, you find them every once in a while in daycares and playrooms but more and more they are being replaced by Legos (insert trademark here!). Those fancy things come with more parts then you care to imagine and if you lose one part can you still make the Batman figure correctly or enough that a 5 year old won’t know the difference between the one that you made and the picture on the box?
What does this remind me of? Technology. Obsolete wooden blocks replaced by shiny new pieces of plastic. I still need to know how the obsolete wooden discs work because I’m going to come across them at some point in time. But at the same time I need to know how the shiny new world of cloud computing or social media work because that’s where my organization is going. The technology portion of our records management building block is the most changing and diverse, but also can be the most interesting. And of course ARMA has many fantastic resources from books and webinars to networking that can help us with this building block.
So whether you are dealing with those wooden blocks of years ago (hopefully sanded and repainted with environmentally friendly paint) or trying to figure out all those shiny pieces and why is there one left over, be sure to have the technology portion of your platform well supported!

Intensive UW eDiscovery Certificate Program

Region Message: Ready or not, Fall 2012 is here -
Hello everyone,
I’d like to introduce myself - my name is Andrew SanAgustin and I have been selected to be the Region Coordinator for the Great Northwest Region of ARMA. Since I arrived in the Pacific Northwest back in 2004, I’ve been an ARMA member and held a few Chapter Board positions. Currently, I am the Records and Conflicts Manager for a Seattle based law firm. I have been in the RIM field for more years than I’d care to admit, and I’ve worked in different industries as a RIM professional. Before arriving to Seattle, I was involved with ARMA for many years (in one way or another) in New York, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC. I am very thankful and extremely excited to be offered this position as a member of the Region Team. I am dedicated in helping out as best I can and supporting our new Region Manager, Jennifer Winkler.
I am writing just days before the ARMA International Conference in Chicago, at McCormick Place (September 23-25) and I am truly looking forward to this event. Not only does Conference provide an opportunity to interact with constituents (past and present), it’s a perfect venue for meeting people, learning about new business and vendor trends, and to caucus with other professionals in our field. Jennifer mentioned the building blocks of your professional life and I believe Conference is a cornerstone. Each time I arrive at Conference, I expect to receive new information. I want to experience sessions focusing on varying insights of RIM. I want to attend exciting presentations that will make me think of initiatives that I can implement in my world today. I find I am rarely disappointed and I return with a revived sense of direction, enthusiasm, and camaraderie (the warm and fuzzies!). I hope everyone gets a chance to experience this.
Certainly it’s challenging keeping up with the Kardashians, our lives, and our careers. But, identifying the building blocks for our professional and personal life is critical - it’s imperative to establish a firm strategy to success, with room for balance. These blocks come in many different shapes and sizes – with one-on-one conversations with folks, work experiences, or events and Educational functions hosted by the Chapters, the Region, as well as opportunities on the national level – and I hope we share as many of them together as possible.
I look forward to the chance of meeting with you this upcoming year, and I can’t wait for us to share war stories and thoughts, and to encourage each other in the work we do.
Hope to see you soon, either at conference or at other gatherings!

Announcement from ARMA International The Principles
Dear Chapter Leader:
The Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles have become a foundation for good compliance across the professional landscape, in three short years, far exceeding our expectations of their use and importance.
Across one of those borders is an organization whose name could cause long-term confusion with ARMA International’s use of the acronym “GARP”. Starting immediately, we are aggressively moving away from the use of the short-hand “GARP” in favor of utilizing a more singular and encompassing name “The Principles.” By doing so, we feel that we will be able to utilize The Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles in a more complete and effective manner, to the wide professional audience in need of such guidelines.
However, it is also incumbent upon us to stress that ongoing use of the term “GARP”, starting immediately, could result in litigation upon individual chapters from a third party, should they fail to cease and desist from all future and new usage. This includes:
• Published or newsletter references
• PR and Social Media
• Or any new printed piece of promotional collateral using the term “GARP”
ARMA International will not be able to assist in covering the cost of litigation facing a chapter. As an organization, ARMA International will also be compliant in moving the brand of The Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles to new heights moving forward in favor of The Principles, by following these criteria:
• Immediately ceasing all new usage of “GARP”
• Removing “GARP” from all collateral, both online and print by July 31, 2013
As always, your partnership and participation within ARMA International’s chapter leadership is a valued and appreciated commitment. We also are grateful for your attention to this matter as we move onward and upward, pushing The Principles to new and existing audiences.

Hello and welcome to another start of the ARMA year!
Summer is going by fast, it just seems like yesterday we were meeting in Richland for the 2012 GNW Region Leadership Conference. It was two days of education and planning and I hope the attendees had a great time and found some tips, resources and renewed energy to take back to their chapters. During leadership we took some time to say Thank You to our fearless leader for the past four years. And I want to take one more opportunity to say thanks to Marc Simpson for his dedication and leadership to the Great Northwest Region and to ARMA overall. Did you know that Marc has been in a leadership role at either the Chapter or Region level for 17+ years?! He has brought a wealth of information to the area and I know we will be tapping into that knowledge for many years to come (can’t get away from us that easily Marc!).
With Marc’s departure and me taking the Region Manager role, that left us with the Region Coordinator position to fill, which we did last spring. Andrew SanAgustin will be joining the Region team as our new RC. As he’ll be writing next month’s region message, I’ll let him introduce himself. Please take a moment to welcome him when you see him.
All of our lives are comprised of many blocks which when put together make us who we are. Family, friends, co-workers, peers, professional associates are all blocks of our lives. Each block can consist of more blocks, such as ARMA is a block of our professional associates, and within that block are more blocks, such as chapter meetings, GARP, webinars, etc. All these blocks work together to make us whole.
ARMA is one of the support bases for my professional building block. I know that every year the Annual Conference will supply me with new resources, tools, and educational opportunities for my position at the City of Seattle. It also is a great place for networking and meeting new peers. This year the Annual Conference is being held in Chicago, September 23-25th and it is looking to be another great conference. As always, we are looking to have a no-host region lunch during the conference. If you are (or someone you know is) attending let either Andrew or myself know and we’ll keep an eye out. Or check the announcement board (generally by the registration table) for updates.
Hope to see many of your throughout the year!

Inventory Blitz: Pecha-Kucha/Poster Session
Calling All RIM Professionals! Time for the Bellevue Eastside Chapter Inventory Blitz!
Have you done a records inventory before? Have a plan in the works? Think you need to perform one and are not sure how? Then this is the event you’ve been waiting for.
We invite you to participate in our May meeting and see how your fellow ARMA members have addressed inventory projects. Presentation participants will share their methods, success stories, and lessons learned. If you are looking for “how to” steps for implementing records inventories, here is your opportunity to learn.
Pecha-Kucha is a fast paced presentation method, also known as 20x20 because it consists of 20 slides containing only images that display for 20 seconds each. Thus each presentation is only 6 minutes and 40 seconds long. This promises to be a creative and fun environment to share our ideas and learn from each other.
This is an open event, anyone can participate. Have questions about inventory projects? Present them Pecha-Kucha style. Not ready for Pecha-Kucha? Create a poster session instead. We want this to be a fun and interactive environment where everybody has a chance to participate, so consider signing up!

GNW Region Message - May 2012
The final figures are in and all I can say is WOW! Not only was our Great Northwest Region Conference a hugely successful educational event, it was equally successful financially! Because of this success, each of our chapters, as well as the region, will receive a nice share of the profits. Why is that important? Because it means that financial boost will help the chapters to provide more educational opportunities to you, the members! It also means that the region can help to provide for the chapters. Thanks once again to our host, The Boise Valley Chapter, our Co-Chairs Dave McDermott and Bruce Walters and their fantastic committee, and as always, the best Region Team on the planet.
So what’s the next great region opportunity? The Leadership Conference is swiftly approaching! Hosted this year by the Columbia Basin Chapter, we are traveling to Richland this June 8-9th. Our conference will be at the Hampton on the river. The view will be great, the weather should be gorgeous, in the heart of wine country, networking with your ARMA friends, learning new leadership skills, sharpening old ones, sharing ideas and just plain having fun. What could be better? We’ve even lowered the registration fee this year to make it easier for more people to attend! How can you miss it? You can’t! Keep watching the region webpage for the registration information and brochure which will be posted soon.
Do you need a little financial help getting to the Leadership Conference? ARMA International provides two Leadership grants in each region to assist chapters in sending their leaders to this training. But you don’t have to be on your chapter’s Board of Directors to receive this training! If you are interested, please let your Chapter President know! And will the $75 carpool grants for carpools of 3 or more still be available? Of course! Just watch the region website at www.armagreatnorthwest.org .
I’d like to close with a few words about leadership. I started my career in the ARMA leadership in February 1995 as Program Director for the Puget Sound Chapter. That summer I attended my first Leadership Conference. It inspired me to continue in what has now spanned seventeen years of ARMA service on the chapter, region, and association levels. A young, and first-time Chapter President, Dave McDermott, who would later go on to being President and Chairman of ARMA International, sat next to me at that conference in 1995 and told me something that has stuck with me all of these years. He told me the more I put into ARMA the more I would get out of it. How right he was. The past seventeen years have brought challenges to be sure. But I have learned so much and grown both professionally and personally. I have met so many colleagues and made many great friends, some lifelong friends. And who knew that a chapter visit would lead to finding the love of my life? (For those of you who may have missed the announcement, Peggy Striefel, Columbia Basin’s Immediate Past President and the GNW Region Director of Marketing and Membership and I were married this past March.) There is much to be said for being involved and participating in this organization of ours!
June 30th brings me to the end of my term as your Region Manager. I can not tell you how honored I am to have served in this role. Getting to visit all of the chapters and meet so many of you has been such a pleasure. Truly, you are the greatest. I have also been blessed to have had the finest people on the Region Team. Thank you to Fran Blaylock, Cindy Fredrickson, Andrea Bettger and Deb Martin for propping up the new region guy four years ago. And thank you Jenny Winkler, our soon-to-be Region Manager, Tim Hunt, Denise Simons and Peggy Simpson for continuing to make me look good. It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve with you.

I’d like to close with a few words about leadership. I started my career in the ARMA leadership in February 1995 as Program Director for the Puget Sound Chapter. That summer I attended my first Leadership Conference. It inspired me to continue in what has now spanned seventeen years of ARMA service on the chapter, region, and association levels. A young, and first-time Chapter President, Dave McDermott, who would later go on to being President and Chairman of ARMA International, sat next to me at that conference in 1995 and told me something that has stuck with me all of these years. He told me the more I put into ARMA the more I would get out of it. How right he was. The past seventeen years have brought challenges to be sure. But I have learned so much and grown both professionally and personally. I have met so many colleagues and made many great friends, some lifelong friends. And who knew that a chapter visit would lead to finding the love of my life? (For those of you who may have missed the announcement, Peggy Striefel, Columbia Basin’s Immediate Past President and the GNW Region Director of Marketing and Membership and I were married this past March.) There is much to be said for being involved and participating in this organization of ours!
June 30th brings me to the end of my term as your Region Manager. I can not tell you how honored I am to have served in this role. Getting to visit all of the chapters and meet so many of you has been such a pleasure. Truly, you are the greatest. I have also been blessed to have had the finest people on the Region Team. Thank you to Fran Blaylock, Cindy Fredrickson, Andrea Bettger and Deb Martin for propping up the new region guy four years ago. And thank you Jenny Winkler, our soon-to-be Region Manager, Tim Hunt, Denise Simons and Peggy Simpson for continuing to make me look good. It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve with you.
I hope to see you all at an ARMA event down the road!

Governance and Recordkeeping Around the World is a free newsletter published by Library and Archives Canada on a regular basis.
The newsletter is a resource tool that contains the latest news, trends, products and tools, articles, and best practices in recordkeeping/Information Management.
Topics include the management of electronic records; retention, storage and disposal of records; electronic discovery; social media; cloud computing; digitization; and access to information and privacy.
Past issues have included special sections on the consequences of keeping too much information and managing government information in the age of social media.
Subscribers will receive each new issue of the newsletter electronically.

Region Message - April 2012
Greetings Great Northwest Region
For those fortunate enough to attend the Great Northwest Region Conference in Boise – Wow is all I can say. There were five FAI’s teaching at the conference. The quality of the speakers was phenomenal. This conference was the premiere event in the Region.
There were 17 people signed up for the new iCRM Training post conference, certainly the ‘icing on the cake’ to a terrific conference. This reminds me to remind all of you of our new GNW Region Mentorship Program. If you are interested in being a mentor or would like to partner up with a mentor, please let me know. The Columbia Basin Chapter has a member who is putting together a CRM study group for the chapter to be held before each chapter meeting. They currently have three people studying to be CRM’s. I have seen notes about CRM training in the newsletters of several other chapters. This is a hot topic with people trying to retain their jobs or prepare for advancement.
Arg!! Calling all pirates. Once again, the Oregon Chapter and the Region are teaming up to march our GNW Region Pirate Ship in the Portland Rose Festival Starlight Parade on June 2nd. We need all the pirates we can get to walk in this parade with our friends from Iron Mountain. Please contact Tyrene Bada, President Oregon Chapter if you are interested in participating. We had a blast last year with Trevor Mitchell and Komal Gulich. They made great Pirates!
The Great Northwest Region Leadership Conference is scheduled for June 8 & 9 in Richland Washington. The registration fee is $50/person to attend. The conference will be held at the Hampton Inn on the River. Everyone is invited to participate. This is a great opportunity to network with the Region Team, other Chapter leaders, Headquarter staff and the ARMA International Board of Directors. The training on each leadership position and the role you play is beneficial to all chapters. The agenda and further details will be published and distributed shortly.
The focus of the Keynote address from Galina Datskovsky, Ph.D., CRM, at the Great Northwest Region Conference was on both President Obama’s direction to agencies to improve records management policies. He stated agencies must deliver plans for modernizing their records management policies by late March. And perhaps most importantly, David Ferriero, 10th Archivist of the United States, has said, "I strongly support this Presidential initiative, which sends a very clear message to Federal agencies about the importance of managing electronic records. Records management must keep up with the technologies used to create records in the Federal government, and the President’s Memorandum underlines the critical nature of this responsibility." Hello Everyone!
As you all know, this is my last year as Region Manager of the Great Northwest Region. It is with some sadness that I will be leaving this role on July 1st , 2012. I have grown to love our region and the many wonderful colleagues and friends I have made within it. But life moves on. Beginning July 1st, the GNW Region will need a new manager.
I am very pleased to announce that Jennifer Winkler has been appointed by ARMA International to be your new Region Manager of the Great Northwest Region for the term beginning July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2014.
Jennifer will bring a great deal of experience and talent to her new role. She has been a member of ARMA and the Bellevue/Eastside Chapter for 15 years. Jenny has done just about everything there is to do on the Chapter level. In 2006, she Co-Chaired the GNW Region Conference. On the Association level, Jennifer has served on the Vital Records Guidelines Task Force and the Branding Task Force.
Jennifer has been BEC's Chapter member of the Year three times having been honored by her chapter in 2002, 2006, and 2008.
She holds a Masters Degree from Western Washington University (History with certification in Archival Administration and Records Management).
Jennifer is also active as the Chair of the Association of Local Agency Records Managers (local government agencies in Washington State), a role that she has served in since 1997. She is also a member of the Seattle Area Archivists (member since 1995) and the Northwest Archivists (member since 1996).
In 2009, Jenny joined the Region Team as Region Coordinator. Among her duties, she Chaired the Region Conference in 2010. She has gained the respect of ARMA’s Board of Directors, HQ and the other Region Managers and Coordinators. This past year, we all watched as she courageously battled and triumphed over breast cancer with grace and dignity, still upholding her duties to the Region as best she could. On a personal note, she is an invaluable right hand to me and a friend. So although it will not easy for me to leave this role in July, I am very thrilled to leave it in such capable hands.

Region Message - February 2012
It’s Region Conference time! Or very close to it. By now the brochure for the region conference should have worked its way to your inbox or mailbox. I hope you will be able to join us in Boise, Idaho for this fantastic educational opportunity. This is also a great opportunity for networking with fellow RIM professionals. Mingle with peers at the Welcome Party, talk cloud storage at dinner on Monday night or commiserate on your SharePoint implementation during the breaks! And if the conference isn’t enough reason to travel to Boise, visit http://www.boise.org/visitors/ and learn about some of the cool things to see and do in Boise (I adore zoos and aquariums so I think you’ll know where to find me during our off-time!).

One of our work plan items for the City Records Management Program is to review GARP and how our program stacks up to the principles. I’m hoping it will help show us where we should concentrate on improving services to City employees and educational opportunities for staff.
This February marks one year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer and started a fight I never thought I would be in. I’m happy to say that all recent blood work came back clear and all seems to be fine, so I’ll be around in ARMA for while more! My ARMA family was a big help and support to me and my family during the past year of chemo and radiation. From notes of support, to your donations to the Overlake Cancer Center, to the three wonderful gentlemen (Marc, Bruce and Dave) who offered up their heads to be shaved as a fundraiser, it truly meant a lot to me. I’m so glad to be a part of ARMA and a part of the greatest region: Great Northwest!

Andrea Bettger has been in Records and Information Management for over twelve years. She began her career at Lummi Indian Business Council in Bellingham, Washington where she received her Master through Western Washington University. Bettger has experience in archival records at Oregon Historical Society and City of Portland. She is a very active member of the ARMA, International and has served at many levels in the local chapter and the region level and serves as the president of the Seattle Opera’s BRAVO! Club.

- From I-5 southbound , take exit 252 (Samish Way), turn right at the stoplight, then left (almost immediately) at the next stoplight (this is an intersection with a Burger King and a Shell Station on the corners) onto Bill McDonald Parkway.

Aileen Cronin from Alaska Airlines will discuss with us the intersections and opportunities that arise from managing both Records Management & Data Privacy for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.
SPEAKER:
Aileen Cronin, currently is Associate General Counsel and Managing Director overseeing Data Privacy, Corporate Security, Records Management & Environmental Affairs for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air ("Airgroup"). She joined the Airgroup in 1998 as in-house counsel in Labor & Employment law group, subsequently moved to the Commercial & Regulatory law group. Four years ago she was promoted to her current position. Prior to Airgroup, Aileen was served as an Assistant Attorney General for WA State and prior to that position she worked for a Nurses' Union. Aileen has a JD from Gonzaga University and a BA from the University of California at San Diego. She lives in South Seattle with her husband and three children.

A Message from the Region Manager of the Great Northwest Region of ARMA
A new year has arrived. While it is a nice time to reflect back on last year, this year I am looking forward in anticipation of things to come. One thing is certain, 2012 will bring changes. I used to hate change, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to embrace it. For many years I was a pilot and a flight instructor. I owned an airplane, flew aerobatics and even did an airshow or two. I was also a professional printer for over twenty years. And once upon a time I was a big collector of baseball cards. But life changed and one by one all of those phases of my life came to an end. Sometimes leaving things behind is difficult. Over time, I have come to realize that had they not, I may never have discovered my passion for genealogy and history. I also would not have become a records manager, discovered ARMA, and made so many wonderful friends. Change is good.
January signals future changes in ARMA. It is time to elect the officers and directors of the Board for 2012-2113. On or about January 9th, notification of e-voting will be sent to all members in good standing. Please take the time to read the candidate’s bios and positions on the questions put forth by the Elections Management Task Force. You might also want to watch the video of the Candidate’s Forum that was held at the Conference in Washington D.C. back in October. The link to that is http://www.arma.org/myarma/governance/election.cfm .
I learned this year that the process just to become a candidate on the ballot is not an easy one. It requires a great deal of thought and not a small effort. Only serious candidates would run that gauntlet. One of my friends and I agreed that sitting on that stage in the Candidate’s Forum felt a bit like sitting before a firing squad. I can assure you the candidates this year are all seriously dedicated to our association and would greatly appreciate you taking the time to vote. So let your voice be heard! Vote!
The deadline for returned ballots is January 27th.
We can’t remind you all of this enough. If you haven’t already, write this on your calendar! The 2012 Conference of the Great Northwest Region will be March 12-13 in The City of Trees, Boise, Idaho. I have attended many region conferences in my years in ARMA, and I have to say this one will be our best ever. For more details, visit our website at www.armagreatnorthwest.org .
I’m getting excited for the 2012 Leadership Conference! This year the Columbia Basin Chapter will be our hosts. The venue has been chosen and it is spectacular. Can you say river view? Start making plans to join us in Richland June 8-9th now!
Calling all Ye Pirates! Avast Ye Mateys! We are once again applying for entry into the Portland Rose Festival’s Starlight Parade scheduled for June 2, 2012 in Portland. Sponsored in 2011 by the Oregon Chapter, our participation was not only a great promotion for ARMA, but it also earned Project of the Year honors for the Oregon Chapter in Washington D.C. This year our merry band of scallywags (which last year included pirates from ARMA’s Board and HQ, the GNW Region, the Oregon, Bellevue/Eastside and Columbia Basin Chapters, and Iron Mountain) is looking to grow! So keep yer ears open for the scuttlebutt.
Another change that is coming to the Great Northwest Region is a change in the Region Leadership. This is my last year as Region Manager. This is not an elected position, but one that is appointed.
